Libraries visits West Virginia capitol for History Day and Library Day

West Virginia University Libraries visited the West Virginia capitol for History Day on March 12 and Library Day on March 24. WVU librarians showcased the vital role libraries and archives play in preserving the Mountain State’s cultural legacy and impact on University-wide student success and its research and land-grant missions.

Together, the two days recognized the state’s rich and varied history and provided WVU Libraries and the West Virginia & Regional History Center (WVHRC) the opportunity to talk with legislators about how the institution continues to serve West Virginians by connecting them with information and Appalachian heritage.

"History Day at the capitol is a wonderful opportunity to talk with our legislators and the public about the WVRHC's collections and services. At the same time, it is a great day to network and learn more about other historical organizations in West Virginia,” said WVRHC Director Lori Hostuttler. “I always enjoy seeing the good work that is happening across the state and making connections with museums, historical societies and advocacy groups among others."

"Library Day is more than a celebration—it’s a crucial opportunity to call attention to the challenges facing libraries in our state, particularly at our land-grant university,” said WVU Libraries Assistant Dean of Strategy, Planning & Impact Jessica Vanderhoff. “It’s a chance to share with legislators how our deep expertise contributes to student success, expands access to information and preserves our state’s cultural record. In an era where higher education and public institutions are under increasing pressure, we must make our priorities clear and ensure our political leaders understand not only the full scope and breadth of our work, but the immeasurable value academic libraries bring to West Virginia and the ongoing support needed to continue our mission."
