February workshops now available

West Virginia University Libraries is announcing its February lineup of workshops designed to enhance research and data management skills. 

Led by the Research Support & Engagement (RSE) team, these virtual sessions cater to both new and experienced researchers.  

Workshops cover a range of essential topics such as funding finding, data management, GitHub essentials, data licensing, open-source analysis software and more, including a special series for Love Data Week (Feb.10-14).

Using Foundation Directory to Find Funding  

Thursday, Feb. 6, 1 p.m. 

Virtual 

Learn how to use Foundation Directory, the most comprehensive prospect research tool for fundraisers, with more than 239,000 grantmaker profiles. You will learn how to search for grantmakers who have funded organizations working on causes and with communities similar to those you serve. This online training will cover how to find funding through foundations and grants using Foundation Directory.  


Whose Data Is It, Anyway? 

Monday, Feb. 10, 1 p.m.

This workshop kicks off a special series for Love Data Week (Feb.10-14) hosted by WVU Libraries. During the hour, we’ll dive into this year’s Love Data Week theme, exploring the complex question of data ownership. Who truly owns data—if anyone—and how does that differ from who uses it? Using Pivot to Find Funding and Grants 

Thursday, Feb. 20, 1 p.m. 

Virtual 

Identifying new funding sources for your research can be a challenge. Learn how the database Pivot-RP can support your search. Pivot is a grant-finding database supported by the Office of Sponsored Programs and WVU Libraries. It allows researchers to create custom profiles and search for research funding opportunities that align closely with their individual research programs.  


Data Visualization and Presentation with R and RStudio 

Tuesday, Feb. 25, 3:30 p.m. 

Virtual 

R/RStudio, an open-source statistical analysis software freely usable on personal computers, is the focus of this workshop. Participants will be guided on visualizing data through the open-source package ggplot2 and presenting analyses and findings with RMarkdown. While prior experience with R and RStudio is beneficial, attendance at “First Steps with R and RStudio” and “Data Cleaning and Analysis with R and RStudio” is recommended. Participants should bring a laptop with administrative privileges.
